What is a Netbook and should I get one?
Answer:
Netbooks are very nifty devices for those Internet and E-mail only users. This mini-laptop typically is sold from $300-$500 depending on features like battery size, RAM, Processor, and Storage. For alot of computer users this would be a good fit as long as you understand what you are choosing, otherwise you may be disappointed. Expect to run some basic office programs, and Internet Applications. If you are looking for something to play video intensive games, this will be a paperweight. Portability is the focus on these things so they are small, so if this is a problem, make sure you have one with USB connections and a VGA connector so you can hook it up to a monitor and keyboard/mouse when you are at home. If you have one, or choose to get one, drop me a line to let me know how you like it.

Should I turn my computer off when not using it?
Answer:
Typically the answer is yes. If your computer is doing some special task that requires it to stay on, you probably wouldn’t ask this question. Turning off the computer takes care of a few things regarding the maintenance of your PC. If the computer is off, no moving parts are running, and nothing can wear down. Also you won’t be wasting electricity. Second, computers require the opportunity to reset your RAM. Third, if you allow your computer to shut down regularly, you can identify problems with software installs and other problems as they are more likely to show up after the computer boots up.

Can’t I just copy my programs to my new computer?
Answer:
Unlike your data files, program files do not typically transfer over so easily. When you install your favorite game, or Office program, there is more going on than simply copying files. The install program is giving information to your PC that tells it what files to use and how to operate the files it just copied. Without this instruction manual for your computer, the files are useless. There are some applications that can be copied and still work, but most modern ones do not. So make sure that you not only keep backups of your important files, but also keep backups of install programs on CD, and most importantly, keep a hard copy of all of those valuable installation codes.

How much on my PC can I make wireless?
Answer:
I was on the search today to find out how I can mount a monitor about 10′ away from a computer, with 25′ of monitor cable. Then I had to solve the dreaded problem on how to run the not so slender monitor cable, until I found the Iogear Wireless USB to VGA. This magic device allows you to connect a monitor or projector from up to 30′ from your computer. Based on the reviews, it’s best to keep it around 15-20′ and make sure the two antennae can “see” each other. This got me thinking: what wires, besides power, are required? With the inclusion of this handy gadget, there is pretty much a wireless device for every basic computer component you use to where the only cables are the ones going to your surge protector. What freedom!

Are all Processors the same?
Answer:
Pentium, Celeron, Dual-Core. These are the words you see next to a potential PC you would like to take home. There is a difference and depending on how you use your computer, you may or may not notice. I’ll avoid the geek lesson on the differences and just use one term to look for:L2 Caching. L2 Caching or Caching is extra memory just for the processor. Pentiums and Core2Duo’s have more, Celerons less. (This is partly why Celerons are less expensive.) This special buffer is what saves commands used most frequently. Where you will notice the big difference with L2 caching is multi-tasking, or working with multiple applications at the same time. So consider how you plan to use the PC and if the delay between application switching will bother you before picking the cheaper computer. Otherwise, this is would be a great place to save on cost.

Is my wireless router secure?
Answer:
Wireless networks are very popular providing portable access for your laptops. The security concern is that if not setup properly, wireless networks can allow anyone within 2-300 feet access to your home network, accessing not just your internet, but your laptop and other computers. You should make sure that when you setup your wireless network to choose an encryption security and choose a strong passkey to go with it. Also, once you’ve connected your wireless devices, it’s a good idea to just turn off the broadcasting from your router, then no one knows your wireless network is there.

Can my built-in wireless card in my laptop connect to 3G?
Answer:
Some laptops do come with a built in 3G adapter, but typically you will have an 802.11g WiFi card. 3G is an internet service provided by cell phone companies and typically require a special card.
What the typical WiFi card will do for you is allow you to connect to your Internet Router without needing wires. You will need to get a wireless router.
Typically these devices are easy to setup. You may want to consult a professional if you have trouble.
Check back next week for a tip on securing your wireless connection.
